Biography

Denny Streets was born in the monochrome days of the early sixties, deep in the industrial heartland of England. After leaving school he completed an apprenticeship at the local steelworks, an engineering degree in Coventry, and a teaching postgrad in Loughborough.

In 1986 he travelled to rural Nigeria as a volunteer teacher and this led to a long career working in international development.

He has lived in seven countries across Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific, each country making its own impact upon him. He finally settled in South Africa where he has now lived for twenty years.

Denny first began narrating his own work and enjoyed it! This led to working with the StarShipSofa podcast, narrating stories and poems; and then the same for the Tales to Terrify podcast.

Now in his 60s and reading stories with his grandson, Denny is able to devote more time to narration.

Previous experience, degrees, and qualifications

A highly successful manager with 36 years’ experience in the development sector. Experienced in setting up new programs and putting in place systems (personnel, financial, emergency response etc.) to successfully launch new areas of work. Curriculum developer, facilitator and mentor in the field of leadership development, organizational development, and youth development.

Interests and hobbies

Writing: Published “8 Million Stories” (a poetry collection), “The Poring Dark” (a collection of short stories and poetry), “Talatu” (a Young Adult science fiction novel), and “The King’s Jewel” (a Young Adult science fiction novel). Various short stories and poems have been published/podcast. Three poems have been nominated for Rhysling Awards and a third was nominated for a Dwarf Stars Award.

Contributed articles on the craft of writing to the Limebird Writers site, and presented a regular old movie review on the StarShipSofa podcast.

How I'd describe my personality in two sentences

Detail-oriented and always wanting to do my best (my wife says pedantic...). Full of fun and full of weird voices!

How I'd describe my approach to my work

When it comes to producing audio work I see it as 'added value', it is not just about saying the words but giving them feeling. I enjoy bringing my voice acting skills to storytelling.

I was brought up to always be on time (or early!) and so deadlines are sacrosanct.

I love collaborating in teams to bring together something that delights the customer.
