Biography

I'm an editor from Canada with a degree in Communication Studies (Professional Writing major) from MacEwan University. Since I was a kid, I've been astonished by humanity's potential for crafting stories without limits: stories that incorporate—but just as often, transcend—the written word. My writing and the work I've edited have been published in local magazines, as well as across the reaches of cyberspace. My professional experience has been focused on online viral content, but by no means would I call that my preferred niche: my favorite pieces to edit are those with a comedic element (even when it's not by design) or rich in novel—especially useful—information.

Previous experience, degrees, and qualifications

I graduated from MacEwan University with a Bachelor of Applied Communications in Professional Writing; my coursework was focused on copyediting, rhetorical argumentation, and magazine writing. I've completed internships at two local magazines where my work was featured both in print and online. More recently, I served as content manager for a small digital media company specializing in viral online content.

Interests and hobbies

I like to read and play strategy games to keep my mind sharp. I'm interested in technology, but what I enjoy most are life's simple pleasures.

How I'd describe my personality in two sentences

I go with the flow until I see an interesting diversion. I thrive in sink or swim situations, but only because I come prepared with diving gear.

How I'd describe my approach to my work

I apply the 80/20 principle to editing; I assume from the outset that the majority of my corrections will be made quickly, just because they're obvious during close reading. The rest of my time is spent on the fraction that gives me pause, and I don't mind going deep with these ones—referring to style guides, online discussions, or textbooks as needed. I work either until I'm confident that my change has improved the sentence or until I start to second-guess myself, at which point I'm willing to ask for help from those with more experience!
