Intuitive Illustrator Here To Make Your Art and Design Ideas Shine
Biography
My name is Aiko Astra. I'm an authentic expression fanatic. I believe that each of us holds a unique piece to share with the collective: one of mine is expression through artistry.
I am a multi-faceted and multi-talented artist with a flair for eye-catching designs and beautiful compositions. Whether you need something illustrated or a popping design to get your brand sparking attention, I am here to make your vision come to life!
- I have been drawing and designing with an array of mediums since I could pick up a paintbrush. I'm also experienced in Adobe Photoshop and learning how to use Illustrator (I'm a very fast learner though so one of these days I will be a pro!)
- I am speedy and efficient, no waiting around for unreliable artists who can't meet deadlines.
- I have a film background with years of experience working in the Art Department: I am skilled in set design/art direction and I have worked as a props master, so I have extensive knowledge of composition and interior design.
- It is important for me to have a communicative working relationship with all clients, so lets make sure that we keep in touch throughout the project!
Previous experience, degrees, and qualifications
I have been painting/sculpting/drawing/creating since before I could walk properly: an entire lifetime of experience! I studied art and art history throughout my school, going on to do a diploma in makeup (beauty, SFX and theatre - like painting on the body). Following this, I studied a Bachelors in Motion Picture Medium majoring in Production Design, whereby I learnt loads about aesthetic, the psychology of imagery (including layout, shapes and color), various programs used to create, and gained an invaluable understanding of composition and form. I worked in the Art Department of the film industry for 3 years, where I was mentored by someone who had studied fine art and was taught awesome practical and artistic techniques. I have been working as an illustrator for the past 3 years, and loving it. Since becoming an illustrator, I have also studied Graphic Design, Book Cover Design, and Book Formatting, and formatted quite a number of children's books, as well as books for adults on health and wellness.
Interests and hobbies
Where do I start? Any and all creative pursuits (art, design, jewelry making, photography, writing, music, dancing and my latest love - pottery). I love health and wellness (physical, mental and spiritual): I am passionate about empowerment and have been uncovering and learning different skills and techniques to empower and grow myself in this experience. I am a meditation/yoga fanatic, as I have really experienced the power that these modalities have had in my own life helping me overcome difficulties. I love nature, am blessed to live in a city where I have access to the mountain as well as the ocean so hiking and beach walks are some of my top ways to unwind. I am training to be a healer and am passionate about spreading the awareness to all that we have the power to heal our lives.
How I'd describe my personality in two sentences
I am a silver linings kind of girl: I am always looking for light and brightness in all things, even when the situation can seem like a murky grey. I'm a survivor, too - I've been to the darkest depths and come back stronger, a warrior. Well this is three, but thirdly, I am a phoenix, rising from the ashes of adversity, with more tales to tell and wisdom to share.
How I'd describe my approach to my work
I allow the work to flow through me, creation flowing freely without the blockages of thought. I find that this is the best way to create pieces that are truly expressive and emotionally provoking. If I sit there and analyze each and every move, the work becomes intellectualized and the result is something that lacks substance.
Why should you choose me for your project
Artistic expression is where I find my Zen zone: it is a form of meditation. Through this, I know that all work that I create will come from the highest part of me and from a space free of thought. I find that when I worry too much about how a piece is going to look, it tends to come out dull and lifeless.
You should know that I put all of me into everything that I do, and I will not stop until I am completely satisfied with the result. Therefore, all the work I put out is of the highest quality, having been intricately crafted with an outpouring of my creative energy. Sometimes, its tiring for me, but know that I have always put my all into all that I do.
I value and appreciate your input, and will do my utmost to make sure that I honor your vision. Making your vision come to life is the highest priority to me.

I recently had the absolute pleasure of working with Aiko on my very first book, and I couldn't be more thrilled with the results. Aiko did an outstanding job not only illustrating but also formatting the entire project. Her attention to detail and creativity surpassed my expectations. From the start, I had a specific vision for the illustrations, particularly when it came to the use of colors, which were very important to me. Aiko took on the challenge with enthusiasm and precision, delivering artwork that was truly impeccable. She brought my ideas to life in a way that felt both seamless and inspired. Beyond her talent, Aiko is a wonderful person to collaborate with—kind, responsive, and incredibly engaging. Her communication throughout the process was excellent, and I always felt heard and understood. I am deeply honored to have had the opportunity to work with her and cannot recommend her highly enough. Without a doubt, Aiko is a tremendous asset to The Urban Writers, and I will definitely be working with her again on my next book!

A customer · 4.8 · August 2024
Aiko Astra is an excellent Illustrator with whom I will continue to collaborate through the remaining 10 volumes of my book! Although she had to deal with some heath issues, her schedule was minimally affected, and the quality of her work was not! Looking forward to volume 2 with her.
A customer · 5.0 · July 2024
I loved working with Astra! I explained my ideas for the book and she not only loved them but thought of other ways to implement these ideas. Her illustrations are just beautiful and portray the ideas meant for each illustration beautifully. So much it brought tears to my eyes at times. We communicated very well but remember that your illustrator could be in another time zone so you send a chat and they pick up later, maybe when you are sleeping and they are up. Definitely would recommend!!

If you're looking for a talented illustrator to bring your book to life, hire Aiko now!! She takes great care in interpreting the story and creating detailed graphics that engage the reader. This is my 3rd project with her, and each time, she exceeds my expectations! My projects are non-traditional children's books that require extra research and details on her end and I can tell she invests a lot of extra time to make sure they are perfect. She is one of the most talented illustrators I've worked with!! She has a variety of styles to fit each niche and formats the most beautiful books. You will love her work!
A customer · 5.0 · April 2024
Aiko is wonderful. She is very talented and her artwork is absolutely beautiful, but more than that, she takes the time to become acquainted with and understand the project fully before picking up a pencil which gives her illustrations a much more personal feeling. She responds extremely quickly to any and all communication, even when sick with a nasty bug! She gave herself a realistic delivery date and came in early, which I appreciated instead of having to have extensions all the time. Aiko is very open to feedback, she wants to get it right and wants to give you a quality product that you are completely satisfied with. She's also great to collaborate with if you ask her opinion from an illustrator's eye. I am so happy I chose Aiko as the illustrator for my book, I plan to call upon her talents again. Thank you Aiko!

This is my 2nd non-fiction children's book with Aiko! She has a gift for intuitive design and brings visual life to the stories. She goes above and beyond to deliver a detailed work of art with the same care one would take with their own book. She's pleasant to work with, friendly, professional, and creative. I highly recommend Aiko and am looking forward to hiring her again for a 3rd book!

A customer · 5.0 · November 2023
Aiko has a gift for transforming written concepts into captivating art. She was able to create stunning artwork with a variety of illustrations styles for my non-traditional children's book. The book required the vision and creativity of a skilled artist to format the many pieces. The book included very realistic illustrations of people as well as cartoon style drawings. She was easy to work with, had excellent communication skills, and was open to feedback. I've already hired her for a second project!
