As a first time client of Urban Writers I find that your freelancers make assumptions about the client's knowledge of the process and are not at all helpful with explaining their role and the scope of their role. Where an editor is engaged, it isn't clear that they go back to the writer to make the corrections instead of just correcting it themselves. Where the experience with the writer has been less than optimal, it is disappointing that the editor is snide in their comments in the chat to try and humiliate and put down the client where they have no knowledge of the writers behaviour or lack of professionalism from the writer where communications have had to become very blunt with the writer to get them to follow client instructions and to move the project to completion. Asking questions about what I should do as a client are taken to be a negative comment on the writer and editor, i.e. corrections were missed by both the editor and writer on first editorial review - I went back and asked 'do I need to list the corrections?' The editor then implied in a response they did not have to provide, that I was was the one being 'difficult' and congratulated the writer...... Really childish and inappropriate stuff. And my question was not answered. Not being difficult, asking a legitimate question where corrections were missed. Which is what they are supposed to be picking up. Sure it was the first editing run, but that doesn't matter where I don't know the process and they have missed corrections. Completely legitimate question to ask how do I point out to them the corrections required. This whole experience has been really off putting. The platform is clunky and slow. Multiple windows open instead of just going to an alternate part of the platform. The process to find illustrator, editors, writers, formatters, is really onerous and it's difficult to find someone that suits the niche skills required. Having 13 or more people applying to take on a particular part of the project is daunting and hours are spent reading profiles and responding to people to find out more about their experience as their profiles are 'free text' and up to them what they put on their profile instead of a predetermined skill set with tick boxes and they submit for work that they really aren't suitable for. There is no 'art and craft' niche either, so trawling through profiles trying to find someone with any skills vaguely related to the genre is very time consuming and in the end, fruitless. I didn't choose this editor because I thought he had any niche experience, but rather because he was factual about how he goes about editing. Would I choose him again? No, because he chose to attempt to put me down with his passive aggressive praise of the writer, when he had absolutely no reason or mandate to do so and no understanding of how difficult it was dealing with her.
