Alex Blair is an experienced editor with a keen eye for detail and a passion for storytelling in all its forms. For over seven years, she's been helping authors transform their manuscripts from rough diamonds to literary gems, tackling everything from sweeping fiction to razor-sharp nonfiction. Her clients appreciate her ability to deliver brutal honesty wrapped in lighthearted commentary—she won't hold back, but she'll make you feel good about it.
When she's not deep in a manuscript, questioning whether someone really needs seventeen commas in a single paragraph (spoiler: they don't), you'll find her testing new dessert recipes on her willing test subjects—er, family—or losing herself in music, her other creative passion. Just don't ask her what she's listening to unless you have time for an enthusiastic deep-dive into her current playlist of choice.
Previous experience, degrees, and qualifications
I have been immersed in the publishing field since I was 16 years old, though unofficially, you could say that I have been writing and perfecting stories since the day I learned to talk! Even as a kid, I used to correct publishing errors in the secondhand books stacked beside my bed with my trusty green gel pen. Now that I'm all grown up, I figured that it was only fair that I took my quirky little passions to the global market and used that same dedication to polish the budding manuscripts that are yet to be put out into the world.
In my seven years of being a professional freelance editor, I have leant my experience towards polishing and perfecting 60+ books, working with individual authors and publishing houses alike. I work well with fiction, since the underlying stories are what I am most passionate about—to date, a good fantasy romance or a thrilling whodunnit will feed right into my guilty pleasure binges—but I also have equal amounts experience with non-fiction, particularly self-help books, teen books, and beginner how-to and DIY guides. I also happen to be a seasoned ghostwriter off-platform, specializing in romance fiction along with the occasional suspense/thriller, and as such I have a good understanding of reader expectations from both an editor's and writer's perspective.
Interests and hobbies
I love to read and find new and different perspectives to empathize with on the eternal topics of love, money and philosophy—even after all these years, it still thrills me that I get to read and enjoy so many new books as part of my career. I love to pick up a book on the most random of topics and breeze through it from start to finish, and walk away from the book with so much well-rounded knowledge on a subject I knew nothing about before.
In the same vein, I love movies and shows, and I will binge through them like nobody you've met! I like to pick apart and critique the finer details in these scripts, though mostly, I just rant about them to my friends. I'm also a total audiophile, and I absolutely adore music in all its forms; you'll find me playing something on my speakers every minute of every day, often even while I'm asleep. Recently, I've found myself getting into baking, and while I am still technically a beginner, my naturally competitive instincts drive me to trying out newer and glitzier recipes and flavor profiles simply for the thrill of it. I'm a creative at heart, really, so I love anything artsy—I'll seek out anything from hanging art to sculptures to interior design videos on YouTube to cute handcrafted vases in indie markets.
How I'd describe my personality in two sentences
Snarky, meticulous, and just a teeeeensy bit pretentious XD. I have a very serious face and disposition, so it always takes someone utterly by surprise when they realize I'm just a bubbly little child at heart, and I LOVE using that knowledge to mess with them.
How I'd describe my approach to my work
I always begin with a quick read-through of the entire document so that I feel more naturally attuned to the vibe of the book and the writer's style. Then, I go through it again, more thoroughly this time, paying attention to the sentence structure, spelling and punctuation, and the intent behind every line. I also take care of formatting during this stage. Once all the edits I've made have been accepted and clarified, I will go through it a second time, and then a third, if needed, until the document is polished and nothing major jumps out at me. Finally, I will do a proofreading check to make sure that every last detail is okay and the book is the very best it can be before it is submitted.

Keeping that in mind, I also ensure that the language, in its syntax, is as close to perfect as it can get. I'm also highly communicative and value open and honest discussion, so you never have to worry about being misunderstood or left out of the process. I have a lot of experience to bring to the table, and I'm excited to share it all with you!
