Biography
Hey! I am Jordan Bray, a senior editor for TUW with 14 years of experience editing. Since a young age, I have loved books. I love finding stories that will make me laugh or feel suspense, that will teach me something, or help me find pieces of myself in the pages. Each story is an opportunity to broaden our minds and see from a new perspective.
I get into the weeds to ensure that content progresses logically, that typographical and grammatical errors are corrected, and that phrases and word choices are appropriate for the topic or story. I can take your book from the developmental stage, where plots, characters, and settings are fleshed out, to the proofreading stage where I find and address even the smallest of grammar or punctuation errors.
I specialize in editing various genres of nonfiction, fiction, children’s books, and SEO articles. Check out my niches to see what types of genres I have worked in. Below is a snapshot of my editing approach for different types of manuscripts.
- Fiction Focus - I will keep track of characters, settings, and plot development, making sure they are
consistent and plot progression makes sense. I understand the concept of beats to keep action moving throughout the storyline and keeping the reader engaged.
- Nonfiction Focus - There is still an element of “storytelling” in nonfiction to make the content interesting and digestible for readers. I understand the importance of taking the reader through the process of explaining important concepts and terms to set the stage for the remainder of the book.
- Children’s Books – I enjoy children’s books, both fiction and nonfiction, because there is always an element of whimsy and possibility! I am familiar with age-appropriate language and terminology, ensuring children are able to understand and be entertained by the book. I will ensure the plot and word choices align with the target age group for your book.
- SEO Focus – I have been trained on the latest trends to optimize web articles and blog posts. I will edit your post to ensure keywords are placed seamlessly within the text, that internal and/or external links are used to enhance the content, and that any images are appropriate and logically placed.
As an editor, I enjoy piecing together the words to tell a compelling story or convey a lesson. I want the readers to be able to get lost in what they are reading without being distracted by errors or confusing content. Being an editor allows me to play a role in the process that gives life to the words.
I also value being part of a collaborative team. I will be a responsive and respectful partner throughout the editing process. A collaborative process ensures my edits align with your thoughts and direction for the book. My goal is to help create the best book or content possible by having a detailed eye and working together.
Previous experience, degrees, and qualifications
I have been editing a variety of content for 14 years, ranging from non-fiction and fiction, technical documents, online content, and more. My experience allows me to appreciate working in the weeds to address the nitty-gritty details, but to also see the manuscript as a whole and make sure it aligns with customer’s goals and priorities.
I have edited over 50 full-length manuscripts, over 50 SEO-focused online content, and over 15 manuscript outlines (plot outline packages) that also become full-length manuscripts that I edited. These range on a variety of topics, from fictional fantasy, romance, self-help, motivation, history, fitness, children's books (rhyming and story), middle-grade books, outdoor activities, health and well-being, and more.
In addition to editing books, I have a Master's degree in Urban Planning and a minor in Cultural Anthropology. I also have experience editing technical reports and plans for municipalities and universities across the United States. I am part of the senior editing team here at TUW, helping to build our TUW team.
I’m a nerd for language and enthusiastic about my work! While I’m methodical and am proficient with APA and TUW style guides, I know the value of the “voice” for the manuscript and how language can be strategically used to enhance that voice and clarify a point.
I love editing and take that passion with me for every project I work on.
Interests and hobbies
I think one of the obvious interests I have is reading. I love to read all kinds of books and am always looking for new suggestions. But beyond books, I really enjoy being outside camping and hiking—rain, snow, or sunshine, I love exploring. Road trips are especially fun as I get to set my own schedule and take detours to see something that is off the beaten path. Seeing the wonders of nature or being able to experience new cities is always exciting!
I also like to take on house projects. Whether it's gardening, putting in sprinklers, adding a retaining wall, putting in tile, painting, I love to transform my home and take pride in getting my hands dirty.
Dance is also something that I really enjoy and have done since childhood. I mostly focused on ballet and pointe but also did lyrical, modern, jazz, and some tap. In adulthood, this transformed into an affinity for fitness to keep my body moving.
I like to take what I love about life and apply that to my work. I've traveled a lot and experienced a lot and studied a lot. I use this in my work to either get creative or provide a new perspective.
How I'd describe my personality in two sentences
I take pride in my work; what I do is a reflection of myself, so I make sure to present myself professionally and friendly, but I’m also not afraid to let it show that I love to do what I do. I’m eager and enthusiastic to edit books as it is such a rewarding and amazing process to be a part of.
How I'd describe my approach to my work
My number one priority is to help make a good book. I want to make sure that readers, regardless of the genre or topic, are not distracted by errors or inconsistencies. When I first get a manuscript, I perform a skim or quick read to understand the overall flow and major points of the book. This keeps me from making a suggestion or change in the beginning of the manuscript that is revealed or discussed later. Then I am able to get into the weeds.
With essential editing, I move through the document with precision to enhance the content by making sure word choices are appropriate for the manuscript, that tense is consistent, and perfect syntax. I make sure to leave a lot of comments for the writer to explain why I edit what I do. As the writer addresses these edits, I work with them. They can provide necessary context for the content. I love working with them to perfect the manuscript.
For developmental editing or plot outlines, I look at the bigger picture and focus on how the story moves from beginning to end. I love to play the devil’s advocate and think about “what if.” It leads to great ideas about how to fill gaps or inconsistencies. I strategically place lines or that really tie the piece together to fill gaps or enhance a section.
Regardless of the type of editing, I always keep the customer’s priorities in mind and am aware of the desired word count. I strategically wordsmith to make sure content is clearly and fully explained but without repetition or fluff.
Why should you choose me for your project
I go beyond the mechanics of editing and look at the manuscript as a whole. I’m not going to do the bare minimum and will catch typos, punctuation errors, and syntax mishaps. I’m also proficient in APA style and have no problem researching answers that may be less well known. I will ensure that manuscripts are consistent with style guidelines and industry standards. My goal is to make the best book I can and work with you while doing so.
I also highly value collaboration because our collective ideas and perspectives only enhance the manuscript. I don’t work in a silo and will have open, honest, and respectful communication with you and the writer. I like to explain why I edit what I do with the writer and will provide updates to you as we move through the process. You are able to see the edits I make as tracked changes in the document, and I would be happy to answer any questions about them.
Lastly, I am efficient. I value your time as well as the writers. I set word count goals on my orders each day and manage my time accordingly to meet those goals. I also communicate with you and the writers to make sure you both know when to expect revisions. I have worked as a professional for many years and understand the importance of producing high-quality work in the amount of time provided.
