Biography

I am an experienced editor with over 25 years of experience in the media industry. I have a passion for non-fiction narratives. While politics and history fascinate me, I also love traveling, pets, gardening, reading, listening to podcasts, and I find humorous writing a joy. I am a versatile editor who insists on attention to detail.

Previous experience, degrees, and qualifications

Hello! Thanks for reading my profile. I have worked in the media and publishing industry since 1994. My experience includes being a title editor for a weekend newspaper, a night editor for a daily editor, and a long-form feature editor at the same publication. As a features editor, I edited narrative nonfiction. The magazine serialized these over several days. Many of these special features won awards. I also have television experience working as an assignment editor and news documentary executive producer for a news station. Over the years, I also edited nonfiction books. I still work part-time with an international news agency as an America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia commissioning features editor.
I love training young writers and am involved in a mentorship and training program for young journalists and students.
I have a Bachelor of Arts, an Honors Degree in Social Anthropology, a diploma in journalism, a TEFL certificate for teaching English to second language speakers, and a Public Relations Diploma. I believe in lifelong learning and regularly participate in online courses—the most current one is on climate change. I have done others in the past year, including the science behind COVID-19 and solutions-based journalism.

Interests and hobbies

Four things really excite me: travel, non-fiction books, gardening, and my family.
I love to travel, and pre-COVID days I would spend at least six months away from home traveling to Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. One of my biggest adventures was walking the Camino, a 500-mile pilgrimage in Spain. Looking to the immediate future, I will soon be snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.
I read mainly non-fiction and primarily current affairs, which helps me with my position as a commissioning features editor. I also consume recipe books (and the food later) and love reading women's magazines for relaxation, travel, fashion, and advice.
I love gardening but am a lazy gardener. I have an indigenous garden that looks after itself, barring a bit of weeding and deadheading.
As for my family, they are my beloved special beings.

How I'd describe my personality in two sentences

I am approachable, supportive, and a good communicator at work. I believe in giving an honest opinion in a transformative and motivating way.

How I'd describe my approach to my work

I am a systematic worker. I like to concentrate on a project and ensure I bring the best of my skills to it. I am particular about spelling and grammar but believe that the essence of editing is not just about these two things: It's about enhancing an author's or writer's work so that it becomes a compelling and insightful read.

I bring experience, a love of editing, and respect for a writer or author to my work. I add dimension and depth to writing but always listen to the writer and author to amplify their voices. Editing is a great skill; it brings the best out of a piece of work and makes it readable and compelling.
