Biography
I left home at age 15 for boarding school, which is where I discovered my immense love for reading. I was an English major in college and parlayed that into an editing job at a tiny publisher. Two years later I started as a project manager at McGraw-Hill, working on business & technology titles. Subsequent jobs over the years were copyediting, further project management at a large publisher named Cengage Learning, and then to freelance editing & proofreading, which I have been enjoying for the past 10 or so years. My main clients have been for Rick Steves travel guides (all over the world), humor titles at Chronicle Books, and a variety of others, including women’s health, biography & how-tos. I’ve been happy working freelance while raising my two boys (both special needs), two dogs, and, who are we kidding, my husband. Editing is my fun time. I simply love what I do & hope to channel that joy into your next project!
Previous experience, degrees, and qualifications
I have a BA in English and almost 30 years of experience as a copyeditor and a proofreader. I have edited primarily books -- at McGraw-Hill I project managed and edited trade nonfiction with an emphasis on business and technical books. As a freelancer my experience has varied, but it includes travel books, graphic novels, self-help, parenting, and some sci-fi and romance, too. I truly love what I do. Interests and hobbies
That dog up there in the picture? He’s pretty much the love of my life (please don’t tell my husband and kids). Obviously, I love to read. And I love to travel -- I’ve been all over the world (and have edited many Rick Steves titles as well). I am a trained baker but don't get to that as much as I'd like. I love dogs (and worked as a vet tech during college), the color Tiffany Blue, reading interesting fiction & memoirs & cookbooks, romantic walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, piña coladas, getting caught in the rain, and quoting cheesy ‘70s songs about piña coladas & getting caught in the rain.
How I'd describe my personality in two sentences
I'm diligent and hardworking and take my work seriously. But without a sense of humor, life would be no fun.
How I'd describe my approach to my work
I want the work to be perfect when I am done. I approach each project with an open mind and open eyes and the desire to make it better while keeping the writer's voice. Because I have been doing this for so long, I look for certain details, beyond missing commas and dangling participles. I look for clarity, voice, repetition, and how easily the writing can be understood. And then I make it better. Honestly, I have only two goals: to give you my best work, and for you to leave thrilled with your book.

Betty was excellent to work with. She was thorough, communicative, and willing to make substantial line edits where the manuscript needed them, without losing the underlying structure or intent of the book. What I appreciated most was her attention to readability, repetition, awkward phrasing, and sections that sounded too mechanical or over-explained. She also raised useful questions throughout the edit rather than simply changing things without context, which made the process feel collaborative. She was also careful with the final presentation, including spacing, tables, punctuation consistency, and the table of contents. The finished manuscript reads much more naturally and professionally than the original version. Overall, I was very happy with Betty’s work and would gladly recommend her for a detailed nonfiction line edit.

I asked a ton of questions, and she went above and beyond to provide answers and recommendations. She is incredibly understanding and flexible. I put her through heck with an AI-generated manuscript in the business and finance niche (I highly DO NOT recommend the AI-generated manuscripts...
