The Past Never Sleeps
The afternoon sun warmed Detective Heather Brown’s face as she stood by the swings in the middle of the busy park. She wondered if she should apply more sunscreen to her daughter’s delicate neck, but she was loathe to disturb the idyllic moment they were both enjoying. Mother-daughter bonding moments like this were rare for them as Heather’s work occupied so much of her time, so each second was precious to them both. Determined to let nothing spoil their time together, Heather focused on her daughter, who, at nine years old, was probably too old to be pushed on the swings but was enjoying t...
Down The Rabbit Hole
“How long have we been here?” Alyssa asked. Although obviously miffed to have her monologue interrupted, Lauren snorted with laughter. “Come on, Alyssa. I know you’re becoming forgetful, but that’s ridiculous! Did you forget your HRT this morning? Or maybe you took too much!” Lauren giggled helplessly at what she obviously believed to be a humorous retort. However, she stopped giggling when she registered Alyssa’s expression. “Are you serious? Do you honestly not remember getting here? I told you drinking in the sun was a bad idea at your age”. Lauren was a whole nine months younger than ...
Echoes
The reason behind our sudden and drastic relocation was the real elephant in the room. Ever since I was about 10 years old, I realised that my parents’ marriage wasn’t exactly happy. I mean, I realised that most of my friends’ parents’ marriages weren’t exactly happy either, and many of them had parents who lived separately. Until then, I’d considered myself relatively fortunate to live with two loving, reasonably well-off parents. Dad was a civil servant, and Mum was an administrator - they both worked full-time, so money was never a huge issue. However, the façade they presented to the pu...
The Arrival
My first thought on waking was the incongruousness of the silence. It wasn’t the usual morning stillness, punctuated by the arias of birds and the steady hum of traffic from the road below. Instead, the silence was so intense that it seemed to resonate on its own frequency. It was unnerving, but sleep still fogged my senses, and no danger was registered. As my brain slowly kicked into consciousness, I remembered tumbling into bed the previous night after a raucous party with my colleagues. I was so tired that I had uncharacteristically failed to remove my makeup, and my eyes felt sticky and...
