Biography
That picture of me was taken by my wife out in the backyard of the house we lived at a few years ago. It captures who I am better than any other picture I have. By the time this picture was taken, I had retired as a geologist and was working as a science journalist and investigative reporter. I was also an established author with several books under my belt, fiction, nonfiction and poetry. I am and have always been a writer and poet, as well as a multi-instrumental musician. Despite my scientific background, or rather because of it, I have a deep spiritual respect for existence.
The background represents the sort of wilderness I worked in as a geologist and sought to understand and protect as an environmental writer. It also speaks to me of the miraculous and artful treasure which is existence. It speaks to me of freedom, of expressing the truth in all things, which is what I try to do in my personal writing. And it places me in a relationship with my environment, which becomes an extension of the expression of my existence.
But I do not spend all my time sitting out in the woods in meditation, with a computer plugged into a babbling brook. I spend a lot of time reading. I am well-read and educated on science in general, particularly physics, environmentalism and wilderness science, wilderness survival, botany and herbology, and of course geology. I also have some educational background and interest in sociology and the other so-called soft sciences. I am a Hindu scholar as well; I am constantly adding to my knowledge of this topic. I am also a shaman and am quite comfortable with Law of Attraction theory. While I have written several novels. as well as short stories, I am more interested in nonfiction projects.
I have been writing for over 40 years. I stay aware of all facets of a concept I am explaining, as well as how my writing is mapping it out and communicating it. I take great pride in being able to communicate cogently and succinctly. That I have been doing it for so long merely adds to my adeptness in the craft.

The Street Where We Live
We live on 299792458 Meters Per Second Street. If we were allowed to cross the road, we would find ourselves in an entirely different neighborhood. The speed of light is the asymptote that defines the border of our physical reality. Change the velocity of light and you change the relationship of mass and energy, altering the symmetry of time and space. There is no limit on the velocity of light, but the speed of light is the limit of our physical reality. Infinite gradations of velocity are possible, and each change in speed changes the playing field of reality. The entire infinite...
The Quantum Conundrum; excerpted from What Is Energy?
Quantum mechanics explains atomic phenomena where Newtonian mechanics fails. For instance, according to Newtonian mechanics, electrons should not be capable of orbiting around the nucleus of an atom. They should fly into the nucleus of the atom and collide. Instead, we observe that in the natural world, electrons maintain stable orbits around the nucleus (until we examine large and unstable radioactive elements). Quantum mechanics explains four classes of phenomena for which classical physics cannot account: Quantization of certain physical quantities, Wave-particle duality, the Heisenb...
Wake-Up Call
At some level of our being, all people existing at this moment know we are in a crisis. The materialism of our dominant culture has made everything that exists subservient to the selfish ego seeking the immediate fulfillment of material desires. We have plumbed the very mechanics of biology and physics until we are capable of perverting our biological existence in unimaginable ways or erasing it entirely, even to reducing this planet to a barren cinder. And in the process of this, we have so thoroughly alienated ourselves from our own heart and soul to the point that we believe the heart is n...
Excerpt from Fiddlesticks
Inside the cabin, Maemae passed Rene along to her mother. The two women held each other and cried. Noticing the fiddle lying at the base of the wall, Maemae retrieved it and placed it on the table. “Rene,” Maemae told her. “She said you will be a powerful shaman. With your fiddle, you will bring renewal to this world when it needs it most.” “I don’t wanna be a shaman, and I don’t ever wanna play da fiddle again!” Rene cried. “She thought you might feel that way.” Maemae approached her and patted her shoulder. “She said that if you love and honor her, then you will play the fiddl...
Exceprt from Sanatana Dharma
Primary reality for Westerners is the physical world of our senses. That which is not materially manifest – the mind, thoughts, emotions, consciousness and life itself – is secondary, ephemeral and lacking in substance. The Indian worldview – although Western consumerism has made inroads over the past century – is just the opposite. The material world is an illusion of ignorance and a corruption of the eternal truth – Sanatana Dharma. The ancient founders of Sanatana Dharma, rishis who lived over ten thousand years ago, began from a different philosophical basis. The ultimate truth, they...
