Biography

Coming from a physics background, most of Mark Garcia's work experience for the past more than two decades is teaching. The subjects range from general physics to more specialized topics in electronics, theory of electromagnetism, classical mechanics, special theory of relativity, and quantum physics. He also taught mathematics classes such as algebra, trigonometry, calculus, and differential equations as well discrete mathematics intended for introductory computer science.

Even with this hard science experience Mark never left his creative readings: novels, memoirs, short stories, popular science, biographies and historical books. He could say that after the four years of his PhD study in chronobiology, he gravitated more and more to fiction and creative writing. He handled a Creative Nonfiction course for senior high schools students in 2017 and really enjoyed teaching that course. In fact, that class have produced a collection of short stories written by his students. Mark really treasures that output and hopes that he can produce more collaborative short story collections in the future.

He started reading novels at a young age with Enid Blyton and Sherlock Holmes mysteries. He then moved on to classics such Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and Asimov's Foundation series. Mark could say that science, science fiction, and mystery fiction constitute most of his reading spectrum. But he also love to browse through medical, history, and philosophical books and gain motivational and beneficial wisdom in the process.

Although trained in the hard sciences, Mark also immersed in more specialized literature studies through online courses and began writing popular science articles for newsletters. His writing goal has been to be as entertaining to the reader as possible but also not losing touch with what is essential and accurate.

Mark has also done research and writing for policy papers whose aim is to propose reforms and realignment in public resources. These kinds of materials entail serious and straightforward composition and require tons of research and literature survey.

Mark Garcia's writing style ranged from witty and humorous to serious and instructional, depending on what is demanded by the publication material.

If there is one thing he can wish from a genie, it would be to live thousands of years and more to finish reading all the good books in the world.

Dr. Marije van der Pol: Unraveling the Psychology and biology of social interactions

Have you ever wondered why on some days you feel blooming in the morning only to feel blue in the afternoon? or have you encountered a person who cannot seem to hold a conversation without making sarcastic remarks all the time? or a person with you want to be with because of the positive energy he projects every time you talk to him? these and other related questions about mood and social interactions are what keeps dr. Marije van der Pol busy.

Prof. Marina Holt and her exciting research on involuntary movement disorders

When I was around 11, there were times when my eyes uncontrollably blinked fast for a few seconds and my head would nod along with the blinking. My classmates and siblings noticed them and just laughed, possibly wondering what was going on with me. I remember my frustrations for not being able to stop them at will as soon as they began. These episodes spontaneously stopped occurring after about a year. I don’t remember anymore how I managed to suppress them, and I still have questions about those experiencses until I met neurology Professor Marina Holt.

Radical Einstein

At this time of surging economic and political crisis worldwide, one wonders what Einstein would say about the rising prices of oil and commodities, unemployment, and global economic slowdown? In his 1949 essay, he pointed to the mode of production motivated by profit as the one “responsible for an instability in the accumulation and utilization of capital, which leads to increasingly severe depressions.” His arguments resonate with the argument that the current trend of monopoly globalization is one of the major causes of our sufferings.

Putting a cork on brain drain

Many chemical engineers or chemists practice their profession as consultants to local or foreign chemical companies helping them solve elementary problems that do not require advanced methods or principles in chemistry. “Brain drain” does not only happen with people leaving the country for employment abroad; it is also possible when people’s talents are not tapped for domestic use.

A phase-only computational model for the mammalian circadian clock

We think that an important predictive value of the current work is our discovery of the mathematical relationships between these four parameters and their contribution to various aspects of entrainment. Now, one direction that biologists should pursue is to do extensive experimentation to search in the complex biochemical system for molecular components which could be responsible for the phase delay and phase advance parameters as well as the intrinsic activity length.

Order from dispersion: plasticity in the period of the circadian pacemaker

Our simulations make clear that the coupling between cells contributes to free running period in the interval after entrainment and, hence, to the phase of entrainment under the light exposure pat- tern. Clock genes are thought to regulate the circadian pattern generated within single cells. Hence, clock genes are not likely to be involved in the modifications of circadian period and phase discussed in this paper.

Chaos and quasiperiodicity in a model gravitating system

The other two quasiperiodic orbits enclose their respective periodic orbit points in the Poincare surface. This implies the existence of three special quasiperiodic orbits which we call boundary orbits. We called these boundary orbits because: one separates the collapsed quasiperiodic orbits from the chaotic region, another separates quasiperiodic orbits associated with the single-point periodic solution from those associated with the 3-point periodic orbit, and yet another one separates the non-collapsed quasiperiodic orbits from the chaotic region.

Greeking Out: A Mortal's Guide to Greek Mythology

The disaster that was the 2008 financial crisis could be the biggest in recent history, not just of the US but of the world. I was one of those who went to work on that crucial day and went home a few hours later without an idea of what would happen to my life. I turned on the television hoping to get some good news around, but everything was collapsing. It’s like I was in a disaster movie except that it was live, real. There was an urgent need to get some air out of the intoxicating atmosphere, and I saw the fourth Percy Jackson installment lying on the coffee table, The Battle of the Laby...
