Biography

Hello there! I’m James Brodie and, well, I’m a writer. Born and raised in a linguistically-minded world, words are one of the first things I ever came to know. All this time later, it just makes senses that I made them my trade - both as a writer for The Urban Writers, and as the main (and honestly, only) creative force behind a self-published newsletter. My love for words also motivated me to study a few languages, resulting in my ability to speak, read, and write English, Afrikaans, French, and Spanish. Additionally, I am able to read and write isiZulu.

My first attempt at stringing some words together was when I was still quite young, writing extremely bad poetry and short stories which I thought rivaled only the greatest of literary works. With time, common sense, and practice, I came to realize that the only way to become as good a writer as I’d like to be, is to write. So I do. Currently focusing on essays and features, I have experience in both fiction and non-fiction. In the former category, I have worked on poetry, short stories, flash fiction, and writing for the stage. When writing non-fiction, my focus has primarily been essays, features, as well as procedural and policy documents.

Even though I majored in Psychology, I’ve written about topics ranging from the coming-of-age queer stories to the basic tenets of philosophical constructs. This “variety”, if you like, stems from my love for research and learning. Finding information and learning how to use it is one of the most intriguing parts of writing. Putting that information into a piece, and seeing it make an impression on others, no matter the size, is the best part of writing, and also its main purpose, as far as I’m concerned.

Whenever I have a spare moment, I turn my attention to media. Any kind at all, I’m not picky. My free time is taken up by reading books from the last millennium, watching films from the last century, and listening to music from the last decade.

Previous experience, degrees, and qualifications

As a writer, I have written essays and features for a variety of film-oriented publications, the contents of which focused on the nature of entertainment media and its relation to society at large. Additionally, I have a Bachelor of Arts degree, having double-majored in Psychology and French, with minors in History and Philosophy. In the course of my studies, I have conducted research and written detailed reports, essays and analyses for each of these subject fields.

Interests and hobbies

Interests and hobbies include watching films and pretending I understand them, making terrible art, and playing team sports.
