Why Rhythm Makes a Good Tagline

We respond to rhythm. It's built into us. Rhythm is in everything that we do and experience. The workweek is a rhythm, the seasons are in rhythm, sleep cycles are a rhythm. Have to have coffee before your first meeting? That's rhythm. The rhythm of life is a powerful beat, to quote Sammy Davis, Jr. So the good news is you already have it in you, and you don't need to be a musician or poet to employ rhythm in your writing or to create a good tagline. And even better, rhythm is effective. Even more than "differentiators" or "action words," rhythm is what gets readers' attention and engagem...

The Beginner's Guide to Neo-Paganism

The term pagan is fraught with mystery and misconception, conjuring images of everything from human sacrifices to leprechauns. Some people associate Paganism with ancient cultures no longer relevant to the modern world. Others assume it is affiliated with witchcraft, Devil worship, and the supernatural. Still others consider it a deeply personal spiritual practice rooted in the love and reverence of nature. In recent decades, the emergence of Neo-Paganism has only added to the confusion. Yet since the establishment of the first Neo-Pagan churches in the 1960s, the numbers of people who iden...

Austin Justice Coalition Toolkit

The need for change in Austin’s racial and economic climate is unquestionable. Austin is one of the fastest growing cities in the country, experiencing 20.4% population growth between 2000 and 2010. Yet it is the only major city to experience a decline in the Black community—a 40% reduction in the same decade. A 2018 survey concluded that the significant out-migration of Black people from Austin is due to segregation followed by gentrification and the resultant lack of affordable housing. In addition, employment opportunities for Black people are sparse. In a city that touts itself as a ...

The Lightbearer

When I was seven, my father took me to a carnival off Highway I-10 on our way from New Orleans to Miami. My mother had just left my father and gone to live with another man. All our stuff was in a U-Haul hooked onto the back of our Camry. I guess he thought a carnival would take our minds off the fact that the world had just ended. He bought me a popcorn. On the way to the Tilt-a-Whirl, we passed by a window where a machine was stretching saltwater taffy. I watched, mesmerized by those mechanical metal arms, the taffy pulled to the point of breaking. Just when I thought the taffy was str...

Why the Writing in the Cue Card Scene in Love Actually is So Good

Writing is effective is when it's deeply personal. How can you tell when writing is personal? One way to know is when it’s riddled with doubt. The repetition in Mark's introduction ("because it's Christmas and at Christmas you tell the truth") reveals a level of handwringing. It implies that he’s asked himself over and over again if he should tell her what he wants to tell her, that he's come up with every reason why and why not, and ultimately decided the yays outweigh the nays. By walking her through his own mental machinations, he's revealing how much significance he's attached to th...
