Biography

My name is Tom and I’m a seasoned scribbler of fiction, nonfiction, and everything in between.

I’ve written copy for local businesses, SEO for websites, edited articles for academic journals, and produced a few dozen novels and nonfiction books.

Since I can remember, I’ve been enamored of books and writing. I learned to type in second grade and promptly churned out a ten-page Cinderella story set in Antarctica. Instead of a glass slipper, Cinderella was a scientist who got frostbite on her foot. To put it charitably, I was an oddball.

I began to think seriously about a writing career in college. For supplemental income, I edited pieces for aspiring fiction authors and journalists, and it was then that I came to look at writing as a kind of problem-solving. Ever the tinkerer, I discovered the same pleasure in a well-wrought paragraph that I derive from a neatly zip-tied wiring harness or a properly-framed window.

For over 10 years I’ve honed my craft as a writer. I take pride in the consistent precision and clarity of my work. As a lifelong musician, I delight in constructing sentences that can carry a tune when read aloud.

My fiction spans anything from choose-your-own-adventure to psychological thrillers, hard science fiction to suburban romance, and goofy satire to horror. I read widely and feel at home working in many genres, such as:

-Mystery/Detective
-Crime/Noir
-Suspense/Thriller
-Romance
-Horror
-Weird Fiction
-Science Fiction
-Speculative Fiction
-Alternate History
-Dystopian
-Paranormal
-Adventure
-Comedy/Satire
-Young Adult

Here are some nonfiction genres I have experience writing:

-Instructional/How-To
-Writing Guides
-Literary Summary and Analysis
-Media Analysis
-Philosophy
-Psychology
-Memoir
-Biography
-History
-Self-Help
-True Crime
-Comparative Religion

I look forward to exceeding any and all expectations in your next project!

Fiction (Mystery Novel: Chapter 1)

Shortly after 2 p.m., Ms. Shandra Gillespie’s black Nissan sedan continued east along Highway 78. Security footage from a Dollar Tree captured the vehicle traveling at a moderate speed. Despite the grainy resolution, investigators could identify a decal on the passenger door advertising Ms. Gillespie’s new real estate agency. At 2 p.m., Ms. Gillespie reached out of her car window to place a large envelope in the post office drop-box. She had on a blue cardigan that her former business partner remembered complimenting over lunch. The post office security footage remains her last confirmed...

Nonfiction (Memoir)

How many times has a writer described their grandmother’s hands as tender, wise, or full of thyme? Or old parchment, or gnarled roots where the soil has eroded. There was no metaphorical dimension to my grandma’s hands. Her hands smelled of bleach. Because of the bleach, her hands were often dry. A tube of lotion could always be found in her purse. She was the custodian at a small Methodist church within walking distance of her house. Unless I was in school, I helped. I felt big knowing the Windex and Pledge labels and what they were for, how to wash a load of dirty rags, where to find ...

Nonfiction (Self Help: Introduction)

A boy tells his mother, “I want to be a drummer when I grow up.” To this she says, “Son, you can be a drummer or you can grow up… but you can’t do both.” However you got to this point, you’re a musician. You’ve written songs to soothe a broken heart. You started a band one summer and never stopped. You sing in the shower every morning and hum yourself to sleep at night. By any metric, it’s the job you’re most qualified to do, but embarking on a career in music seems either too scary or too impractical to warrant more than the occasional daydream. The music industry has many doomsayer...

Nonfiction (Branding Basics: Excerpt)

How hard would life be if no one had a name? You could picture a face, but what about people you haven’t seen in years? You’d cling to small attributes, a certain hat or sideways smile. What if these too were taken away? Brand is identity and, as with a person, your brand has recognizable features. Mascots and spokespeople give customers a face to interact with. A company’s name should fit snugly and encapsulate who you are and what you do. Don’t think too hard about it. Once you find a great name, you’ll feel like it was there all along just waiting to be discovered. These familiar...

Fiction (Contemporary Romance Novel: Chapter 1)

I owe most of who I am today to my Papa, who taught me a pair of valuable lessons at an early age. First, take pride in your accomplishments. Second, nobody else cares. When people ask what I do at Channel 5, I never know how to answer. For the record, my LinkedIn says Broadcast Technician/Assistant Webmaster/Ambassador to Starbucks. At the time I thought that last item was pret-ty clever, but now I lay in bed reciting everyone’s coffee orders to fall asleep. That is, when I do sleep. Ever since Terrell quit, I’ve been on call 24/7, a fact I bring up more or less constantly but don’t rea...
