Biography

I'm a journalist, researcher and writer with at least five years of experience in the field. I have a weirdly wild imagination (seriously, my dreams are even messed up), but I enjoy translating that into logic. So here I am trying to make sense of the world through my writing. I read a lot of non-fiction, particularly biographies of change-makers, especially women and stories about people from war-torn countries. I also write short biographies. I have a grip on news and current affairs and I really enjoy writing fun and quirky feature articles. My real love, however, is raw, intimate and curious content, the kind of stuff that makes you think and think again. That's something I want to contribute to in a fun and refreshing way. Also, I'm a dancer!

Coping with depression

Exactly ten years ago I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder. It was never spoken about in South Africa then. Initially, I had many negative ideas about seeking help. I tried to keep my mental health conditions private and secretive and also thought that I would be strong enough to cope on my own and then things got really bad. I was in my last year of Honours degree in Psychology. I had a complete burnout and then I was diagnosed with depression, anxiety and OCD.

Don’t underestimate saving and a side hustle

So you’ve just started your first formal job, and pocket money and cheap booze are a thing of the past. (What happens in varsity, stays there, right?) You’ve got your first pay cheque, and it’s more money than you ever thought you’d see in your account, so it’s time to start living your best life, right? Well, hell yeah, but let’s not be reckless. Saving in your early 20s is actually where building wealth begins. We hear about saving and that it’s “important for your future”, but we don’t know how to get down to it properly or whether our methods are even effective. Piggy banks are...

Should I download the new contact tracing app?

In keeping with the global trend of using technology to try to stem the tide of Covid-19 infections, the government recently launched an app that lets YOU know if you have been exposed to another person with the novel coronavirus. But many people have been sceptical about the tracing app, called “COVID Alert SA”. And justifiably so: in the age of the internet, where governments and corporations seemingly have access to every detail of our digital lives, is an app like this safe to use? Let’s unpack it! The verdict (and we must stress that this is a tentative one) is… the app is ...

Bring #BlackLivesMatter home too

Policemen and law enforcement officers in America have historically used their power and authority to control the movement of black people. Before the Civil War, slave patrols were tasked with tracking runaway slaves throughout the United States. When slavery ended, black people were still detained and punished for crimes that would have been excused if a white person had done it. Policing in the US is associated with force by a system aimed at maintaining a social hierarchy based on the belief in the racial superiority of whites. In a word: racism or racial profiling. So, that’s part o...

Sexual assualt

One morning I woke up and my mom was standing by the door with a white fur coat covered in blood, and my dad was standing on the other side with a knife and a door handle in his hand. I couldn’t understand if my mom was bleeding because my dad had stabbed her with a knife, or because he hit her with a door handle. I was 6 at the time and I asked him “why do you always do this, don’t you love her? Don’t you love us?" My dad tried to speak to me and my mum got away.
