Biography

Hello, my name is Alex Milgram. I have experience with both creative and journalistic writing, having authored numerous novel-length projects as well as a weekly column and several op-eds. My interests are likewise eclectic. Along the erudite vein, I consider myself a student of history, with particular interest in geopolitics of the 20th century, and in Eastern Europe more specifically. Some of my non-fiction interests include (but are not limited to):

– Soviet/Russian history
– American history
– German history
– Socialism
– Fascism
– Colonialism/Imperialism
– Economic history
– Environmental history
– International institutions (UN, EU, NATO, etc.)

Creatively, I have written a great deal of fiction. I would consider historical fiction and science fiction my two favorite genres, but I am never one to limit myself where books are involved. Some of the authors which have most shaped my writing are Timothy Zahn, Ursula Le Guin, Orson Scott Card, and George Orwell.

My fiction tends to focus heavily on internal voice and often deals with unreliable narrators and complex (or convoluted) motivations. I will confess that I have a certain predilection for big words, but I try for brevity. My optimal writing should therefore be concise and to the point, yet not without a degree of poeticism and artistic flavor.

Looking Down the Barrel

The bulk of the CNT-FAI militia are not foreign volunteers, but local men and boys who were enlisted out of necessity, not idealism. These men – Aragonese and Basque, for the most part – are an awfully rough sort. They look much like Spain itself: weary, sullied, yet despite that, very much alive and determined. Tattered clothes, rags more like, crusted with dirt and dung; shoes with holes in the soles, no socks, feet ravaged with fungus; sunken cheeks sprayed with stubble, lips chapped and blue; callused hands, gloveless, the fingernails yellowed and long. Yet they never complain. The fore...

The Bungalow

“Looking for a drink, young man?” The traveler turned around, peering into the darkness. He had thought he was alone here. He was used to being alone. For all he knew, he had always been alone. But the foreign voice did not startle him. It was hardly foreign at all. It was familiar to him, ineffably so. Had he heard it before? From where? Squinting, the traveler discerned a figure, its outlines sketchy and uncertain. It sat a few meters away at a circular table. His surroundings began to make more sense to him, amorphous forms coalescing into recognizable shapes. The traveler underst...

Mannequin

The metal against my skin is cold and sharp. I gasp at the sensation, like an excruciating sort of acupuncture, as it hits me so suddenly. I arch my back, and find, to my terror, that my limbs are cuffed. I struggle for a moment, but I am thoroughly restrained. My chest heaves, lungs filling with breath after breath of frigid air. I open my eyes. There is a bright light above me. The rest of the room is pitched in darkness; I strain my neck to look left and right, but I cannot make out anything beyond jagged shapes and distorted shadows. I take a few more breaths, in and out, attempting...

The United States Space Force and the Militarization of Space

Space: the final frontier. It captivates our imagination like nothing else. The entire science fiction genre is, in its distilled essence, a grocery list of humanity’s aspirations for this untapped realm. And when we consider the cultural canon, a certain pattern comes to the fore. Star Wars, Star Trek, Ender’s Game, Independence Day, 2001: A Space Odyssey – what do these have in common? The answer is simple: war. It seems to me that in humanity’s collective vision, the cosmos represents a new theatre of war, and that, when the technology becomes readily available, we will be engagi...
