Biography

“The limits of my language mean the limits of my world.”- Ludwig Wittgenstein

My name is El, and I have long been fascinated by the power of words, the mystery of language, and the endless variety of ways in which these can be used to express thoughts and concepts, even abstract ones. The elaborate code that we call language is indeed an attribute that categorically sets man apart from all other living things. And for some of us, it has become a special art. So for me, discovering TUW was like walking into a veritable candy shop!

If you’re wondering how my love of language and writing was born, well, it must be rooted in an ingenious teaching tool that featured in my early English classes at junior school. It was appropriately called The Reading Lab, and consisted of progressively sophisticated packages of English exercises, each centered around a captivating short story. Comprehension questions, vocabulary tests, and research tasks were but a few of the exercises in each package. That brilliant learning tool stimulated my love for the art of English. It was in those days that I made an entry to an essay contest held by the Eisteddfod Society and obtained a third class award for prose. Thenceforth there was no turning back! In senior school, works such as Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” and Golding’s “Lord of the Flies” kept the writer’s flame burning within me.

I became a pilot by profession, and the thousands of hours that I have spent among the clouds, beneath the moon and stars, or simply in the heart of an infinite blue sky have provided rich and deep inspiration for my writer’s mind. I am not constrained by genre, but if I must single out a few favorites, I would have to include:
Aviation
Science and technology
The animal world and nature
Arts and culture
Travel
Family relationships and parenting
Emotional health
Public speaking
Personal organization
Fictional short stories

Few things stimulate my mind in the way that a writing assignment does. So I invite you to entrust me with the seeds of your idea and let me return to you a work of art that shall be worthy of your mantlepiece!

Did it Evolve, or was it Designed?

Remarkably, it is only in recent times that scientists and design engineers have begun to openly acknowledge the immeasurable debt that they owe to nature for the design ideas that they have mimicked from it. Consequently, not too many of us are familiar with the term biomimetics, derived from the Greek words bios, meaning “life”, and mimesis, meaning “imitation”. It refers to a field of study that analyses the ingenious design features found in the biological systems of nature, with the idea of applying them to synthetic products and systems. Biomimetics holds infinite promise for futu...

Lessons from the Bible on how to Improve your Marriage

Much has been written about marriage over the years and, indeed, over the centuries. A lot of that has been fanciful and idealistic. Often what is written on the subject has a cultural perspective, east versus west or north versus south. Such perspectives in turn have evolved with the passage of time. But there is an eternally enduring perspective on marriage that has never changed and that cuts across cultures and epochs. It is in fact the original perspective, that of Divine origin, which is providentially preserved in the oldest book in our possession today, the Bible. Not too many peopl...
