Biography

Catherine Cole has worked in the education sector for almost 20 years. She is a published writer with an affinity for subjects in the humanities and biology. Catherine is enthusiastic about mental health (she aced her physiological psychology class), well-being, parenting, nature conservation and protection. She also has a keen interest in germs, pet care, ethnobotany, and Buddhism.

She holds an undergraduate degree in Psychology (BA), a Master's degree in English Literature, and completed a university short course in Feature Journalism in 2020.

Catherine is eager to put her writing knowledge, research skills, and curious mind to work on your project.

She lives with her tall teenager and their little zoo of two kitties and a charismatic brown hound. <3

Weird fact: Cole has a thing for American authors named "Tom," mainly Tom Wolfe, Tom Robbins, and Hunter S. Thompson.

Interests and hobbies

I have a diverse range of interests, including spending time outdoors, walking and collecting bugs, bones and rocks. I'm fascinated by vectors of disease and the bacteria they carry. When I'm not outside, I spend time with my loved ones because family is very important to me.
Generally, you will find me reading about and doing research on the natural world, parenting and spirituality in my spare time. Also a keen motorcycle enthusiast and wish I did more sailing.

How I'd describe my personality in two sentences

Enthusiastic and helpful human who believes that with compassion and understanding pretty much anything can be achieved. A bit weird and unorthodox, but quite comfortable about it.

How I'd describe my approach to my work

The TUW schedule demands that writers learn about a topic rapidly. I usually consume vast quantities of information in the planning stages and distill novel and valid points from that research. After an intensive research phase, I drum out rough versions of each section before returning to flesh them out and polish them. I take my work and time seriously.

Why should you choose me for your project

I'm personable, professional and love researching and writing.

Non-Fiction, Health & Fitness, Religion & Spirituality, Self Help, Pets

The Gloriously (un)Gory World of Pet Crematoria

Light streams onto my screen as the face of Skinny van Schalkwyk appears out of the viscous sheen. She’s effervescent. There is no trace here of the gaunt undertaker stereotype, despite the moniker. Skinny owns PawPrint Pet Funeral and Cremation Service with her brother. I am talking to her from their family farm in the Northwest province about running a pet cremation service. I also catch up with Dean Webb and Dave Oxenham from Legacy Pet Crematorium to find out what it takes to be the largest pet crematory in South Africa. To start, technological developments and a global attitude s...

It is tick season, beware!

It’s tick season, beware! With the recent lock downs still fresh in our collective memories, pastimes like hiking, camping, cycling, jogging, walking the dogs or just lying under the stars have become popular again. Part of the allure of estate-living is that residents, young and old, can take advantage of being outdoors. As the weather warms, more people are heading outside for leisure. The warmer weather also signals the start of the local tick season. Ticks carry a host of diseases which pose a health risk to humans and animals alike. I interviewed a General Practioner from the...
