Experienced writer and researcher seeks interesting non-fiction projects
Previous experience, degrees, and qualifications
With regards to non-fiction, I have two degrees, a background as a researcher in London and I currently freelance as a Senior Contributor for a large US newspaper on an ongoing basis. I also often get asked to write for other national UK newspapers and publications.
I am a real book lover and an avid reader and currently writing my first fiction novel.
Interests and hobbies
Anything to do with words! I love writing, yes. But I believe Stephen King when he says that in order to write well, you need to read. A lot. I'm a big consumer of fiction and non-fiction, as well as daily newspapers. I'm rather partial to Wordle too and a big consumer of language lessons. I love French (I live in France) but I'm currently trying my hand at German—I love identifying the ways that other languages intersect with English, and if I can speak them successfully, then all the better.
How I'd describe my personality in two sentences
As a freelancer, I juggle lots of ongoing writing projects simultaneously and I think the work matches my personality. I like jobs that keep me moving from topic to topic and that I can research, investigate and then write about.
I'm a planner with a big imagination.
How I'd describe my approach to my work
First, I think about the brief. Who's the audience, what does the client want (tone, depth, length, opinion, etc.), how is it best broken down, what are the obvious themes, etc.?
Then I like to think about what I already think I know about the subject. Before anyone else clouds that space. I make notes, divided into topics. I underline and I love separating my thoughts with colors. Ideally, on the wall in front of me.
Then I like to read around a subject to get my thoughts in order. Research it, study it. Maybe watch things too. One of my favorite parts is when the project takes shape in my head, before the writing starts.
Then it's about planning the writing. Is the narrative linear? Are the themes obvious? Are there more interesting ways of breaking something down so the reader has a better experience? How should the book feel? It's obviously easier to write with a firm plan.
That's when I start with a blank page—the most anxious time, as that's when you have to deliver words, a lot of words, and ones that make sense and give pleasure.
Hemingway once said that writing is rewriting. There are tools I use to get fresh eyes to help gain perspective on what I've written.
And we haven't talked about pacing - clients have deadlines and I need to make sure I can deliver on a job in regard to everything else that's going on. On longer projects that means constant communication with the client so that there are no surprises on either end!
Why should you choose me for your project
We need to make sure that we match in terms of interests, tastes and style. I want you to feel confident that you're going to get what you want. I might love writing—and it's my livelihood—but I don't just write for the money. So if I love the idea of your project, you'll have my full attention, a planning schedule that is second-to-none, and lots of questions before we start about what you need and want—as well as lots of communication along the way.

American Conspiracy Theories: Why We Believe When Evidence Points to the Contrary
Can you imagine believing in lambs that grow on trees? It might seem fanciful, but in the Middle Ages, the travel memoirs of an English knight called John Mandeville talked of a fruit that grew on a type of Indian tree containing a tiny lamb inside. Slowly, the idea began to circulate amongst European scholars who also began talking of this wondrous so-called lamb fruit. Gradually, more and more people believed in the idea throughout Europe—botanists gave talks, people wrote books—even though no one had ever seen one. It’s just one example of a conspiracy theory that might seem ludicr...
