Biography

Jane Angels has a B.S. in English/Writing. She graduated at 52, a non-traditional student in two ways: older than many of her classmates, she earned her degree entirely through online courses. Jane waited so long to complete college because she had to get life out of the way first. Mother of two girls and Grams to a charming 6-year-old granddaughter, Jane lives in rural Oregon with her unruly husky, Sofie, and three cats. She is looking to move back to Washington to be with her daughters and granddaughter, though. Jane surrounds herself with books - the possessions she is not willing to give up - and she loves to read just about anything. She enjoys YA books, fantasy, creative non-fiction, and classics. Succumbing to cliché, Jane Austen is her favorite author. Because of her love for books, Jane wants to write for a living, but has discovered she also loves the editing process because it makes her writing that much better.

Previous experience, degrees, and qualifications

I have had two poems published and two creative non-fiction pieces published in college literary journals in the last three years. For years my writing was only for myself, but I've wanted to be a published author since I was a girl. I received my Bachelor of Science in English/Writing in April 2022 with a minor in Interdisciplinary Writing & Rhetoric. I am new to Urban Writers, but I have written many research-driven papers in college. I focused on writing classes and took a few that I didn't need to get experience. However, I also spent one term as a journalist for the college newspaper. I spent five years writing unit studies for a homeschool program.

Interests and hobbies

I sew, crochet, and have tried to paint. Not successfully, but I'm still trying. My favorite thing to do is write and read. I have several stacks of books that are still unread, and the pile will probably never shrink because I keep buying books. But I read a lot to improve my writing. College helped me realize that I love the research process of writing nonfiction. If I could be a professional student, that would be my life. I love learning, and once I encounter a topic that interests me, I will research it to death.

How I'd describe my personality in two sentences

I am a quiet, people-pleasing introvert who loves animals, her family, and learning. I am slow to anger, don't hold grudges, and internalize everything, but sometimes I think it would be healthier if I were a little more aggressive.

How I'd describe my approach to my work

I go down research rabbit holes, but I try and focus on each section at a time. Editing as I go slows my writing but is less stressful than doing it all at once when I'm finished. If I'm writing fiction, I don't edit while in the process. Because of the research involved, I edit while I'm writing when I do nonfiction, though.

Why should you choose me for your project

I pay attention to detail, listen to the client, and am thorough. I don't want to give just half the information; I want to include it all. Which can slow me down because the research gets a little intense, but it's worth it. I love the writing process, which shows in my work. My writing is engaging, and I like to write as though having a conversation with someone. I want to make the reader feel as though I'm talking directly to them, that I have written the information down just for them. I try to get that mix of professional and personal without being too heavy on either side. I am having fun when I write and I want my work to showcase that process.

Complicated Relationship

Complicated Relationship Dad and I had a complicated relationship. I grew up in Alaska: born in Glenallen and lived in Kenny Lake, a farming community of homesteads, until I was almost five. Dad was 37 when I was born; he had moved to Alaska from Connecticut to take advantage of the Homestead Act. My earliest memories of dad are all about work, even though he never made money from the land. He supplemented any income from the farm by driving a fuel truck, then later a school bus. During the summer he worked sunup to sundown growing hay. Alaskan farmers didn’t get two or three cuttings. Da...

Native American Folklore

Folktales, myths, and legends: the stuff of childhood. Stories of fantastical creatures, villains, and heroes sharpen imaginations, expand the fear of what’s under the bed, and define true love. These stories shape every culture, offering moral tales, hero stories, and sometimes pure entertainment. The Native Americans tried desperately to keep their history alive even while experiencing war, starvation, and forced assimilation at the hands of the white man. Folklore, myth, and legend helped the people remember their life and the harmony they felt with nature. While some younger generati...

Wicca and criticism

My oldest daughter, the inspiration for this paper, follows the Wiccan religion. My husband and I taught our girls that they were free to choose their religion, even if that meant no religion. We introduced them to mainstream Christianity. As they got older, the girls learned about the various denominations through friends. We wanted our girls to be free to make their own, hopefully informed, choices since we recognize that religion is or can be a vital part of life. Religion is something that will shape values and direct actions. One day several years ago, my daughter told me that she had ...

I had a lovely time working with Jane! She does her research and writing in ways I feel I would have. So I loved that she captured my voice. She communicated very well and was great at working through the changes. I appreciated her support, research, stories and help creating a wonderful book with me.

I loved working with Jane. She was not only professional and wrote very well; she was passionate about the book topic, and it really shined through in the writing. She was committed and took any changes or comments I had and worked with them. I'd work with her again in a heartbeat on any other project!
