Biography

Hello!
After earning a first-class Joint Bachelors degree in English and Art History, a first-class Masters degree in Medieval and Renaissance English, and completing three years of a PhD in Old English literature, I eventually decided to up and leave academia and the rebel city of Cork and live a simple life in very rural Kerry.
So, during the last eight months, I built a cabin, bought an outboard motor, and adopted a cat with my partner. Now, I spend my days fishing, farming, baking, playing music, and writing: quite an idyllic existence really, and one which shines through in my writing.
I am a keen, albeit occasional, poet whose work explores the relationship between mythology (primarily Norse and Greek), country life and living (fishing, farming, blacksmithing etc.), and the natural cycle of life and death.
I also play and sing lots of Bob Dylan and Neil Young songs, and am a big Tolkien fan.
During my near decade in academia, I worked as an editor for the peer-reviewed online literary journal Aigne (University Colle Cork' main literary journal). I also spent three years happily tutoring incoming university students on key texts in English literature, from the emergence of dramatic paradigms in Aristotle's Poetics, to warrior-cultures in the epic Beowulf, to the relationship between text and image in Art Spiegelman's comic Maus.

To summarize: poetry, old gods, nature, learning, and rock and roll. I'd like to think that's me:)

Considering this breadth of experience, I'm pretty sure I'm the writer for you!

Sunshine Sandwiches

“Do you remember when we created all this?” drawled Fletch, in between sips of his lemonade. He gestured vaguely to the daisy-littered meadow. His shorts were faded, and his shirt-sleeves were rolled up to his elbows. The sunhat which he wore had seen better days. Its washed-out, wafer-thin form fluttered in a slight breeze. “Do not presume to bait me, Fletch. I made this. Charlie did his bit, but the Earth is mine. Considering what it costs me, a sense of ownership is the least I deserve”. It was Simone who said this. Her reply was a brief release from the torpor which she was enjoyin...

Of the Heath

I am of the heath. Tales of World Trees and stolen fire, these are the stories I love. Artemis bathing in a forest clearing, carving up Ymir to create a world. In these I see our lot writ large, for like Actaeon, we elementals make for fine fodder. But these tales have ancestors in the whispering willow, in the lingonberry, and in the reeds. I am of the heath and the tales of my heritage are found in the heather, in the wild orchids and the bog-cotton. Let no coffin cage me, no domesticated domicile keep the tale of my bones from the dawn chorus. I am of the ...

Introductory Paragraph to Thesis

This thesis explores how narrative manipulation of the gaze impacts representations of female violence against men in Old English and Old Norse literature. To quote Michel Foucault, ‘the body is […] directly involved in a political field; power relations have an immediate hold upon it; they invest it, mark it, train it, torture it, force it to carry out tasks, to perform ceremonies, to emit signs’ (25). The body is a canvas, upon which political images are constructed. It follows that, without the gaze, the body being witnessed, whatever political signs the body may contain lose their imita...

Analyze People Like A Covert Agent

What really defines something as a text is that it was crafted with the intention of communicating. Be it Picasso’s Guernica, Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, or Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, these are all texts because they were created for the viewer/listener/reader—even if the listener or reader was just the artist themselves. The body is no different. It is crafted with communication in mind—it is just a simple fact really. Humans evolved as a social species. We are meant to communicate with others of our kind, and while spoken language may have taken thousands of years to develop and refine ...
