Biography

I’m Malcolm McDermott, and I analyze the world through my writing. To me, it is more than striking the keyboard with my fingers and turning outlines into opuses. I learn about myself and the world with every letter I type.

My belief in writing wasn’t spurred until the fifth grade when, after I spent a sleepless night touching up an English assignment, the teacher called upon me to read my story to the class. The ensuing applause nearly shattered my eardrums (Okay, I may be misremembering that part). What I’ve never forgotten is the fire my teacher lit in me. I’d love to kindle that same flame by working with the best clients on The Urban Writers Platform.

I stuffed my undergraduate with a wide range of long-form subjects. We’re talking about everything from mock government policies to the alleged love affair between Alexander the Great and his trusted general Hephaistion. I’ve also taken accredited courses on both fiction writing and digital marketing fundamentals.

I’ve run the gamut of styles outside of the classroom with five years of published writing experience. I’ve sat in the driver’s seat of a truck called a music blog. It had a loud horn. I honked that baby in the form of music reviews, interviews, and retrospective columns. I’ve also had my fiction and poetry work published in both North American and European periodicals. Read on to see which other genres I’ve tackled.

Being a lover of many artistic mediums and divergent styles I’m keen on finding the narrative in everything. There’s as satisfying of a character arc in Avatar: The Last Airbender as there is in the workout plans cluttering my hard drive. My tastes oscillate between contemporary music sites like Bandcamp, the magic realism of Haruki Murakami, and the bluntness only a good recipe can deliver.

As a ghostwriter, I recognize that the largest hurdle people face is the filter between their thoughts and output. I’d love to mitigate that filter and get your ideas across as they do in your head. We’ll turn gold into diamonds.

If this has piqued your interest then hit that button. Or don’t. If you think it’s risky remember this - you won’t be risking anything by working with me.

I've handled topics in these domains.

Assessing Willie Dunn's Folk Song "Charlie"

On the tender, finger-picked folk track “Charlie” Willie Dunn tells of Chanie Wenjack, a young Anishinaabe boy who died mere feet away from a CN (Canadian National) railway track after fleeing his residential school on October 23, 1966. The freezing snow wracks the boy’s small body and his thoughts wander towards his father and his deceased mother and the track grows colder as Wenjack’s time in the frigid winter crawls onwards. “Charlie” marks a few recurring themes in Dunn’s life. Notably, his finances. He received $600CAD for recording “Charlie.” Dunn was grateful for the then large s...

Two Dudes and a Rubik's Cube

“Hey buddy,” I heard from the stall in the washroom of Stanley Park North. I was not this man’s buddy. I was not the designated bathroom buddy. Without hesitation, as I wasn’t doing anything to prevent me, I assumed the role of buddy. “Yes sir.” “Will you help a brother out?” “No toilet paper?” “Not that.” He kicked a roll out beneath the door. The dust and debris and dirt from the Doc Martens and New Balances and Suicokes Kisee-V’s and Sketchers of pedestrians sullied the sheets of fresh white relief. “I forgot how to stand up.” “Well,” I tried the door. The tall black slab was ...

Green Exercise - What Is It and What Are Its Benefits

Do you love your exercise routine but wish the aesthetic was more exciting? I know I do, which pushed me to look into green exercise! Don’t worry - it doesn’t involve any hasty trips to the art store Green exercise is any physical activity that takes place outdoors, ideally surrounded by plants, water, and/or trees. Most of the benefits come from the added positive effects on mood and self-esteem, even more so than non-green exercise. Studies show that many forms of green exercise like running, swimming, strength training, and yoga almost instantaneously produce self-esteem benefits....

Pharmaceutical and Therapy - Why They're A Part of My Hollistic Approach

I hope this isn’t a hot take for anyone following this account but I am not against pharmaceuticals & therapy Although I tout a holistic approach for managing anxiety, I believe that pharmaceuticals and therapy can be a necessary part of our holistic toolkits. I like to think of it this way, anxiety is an illness. What do we do when we’re ill? We take medication. If you’ve got asthma you use an inhaler. A little Claritin can go a long way in dealing with allergies. And you best believe I’m spreading some hydrocortisone if my eczema acts up. If all of these medications are normalized I...

Advaita Vedanta and Schrödinger’s Cat

Schrödinger’s Cat is a quantum physics thought experiment by Erwin Schrödinger that spawned an important philosophical debate over the active role of the observer. The experiment is outlined as such; in a hypothetical situation, a cat is placed into a steel box along with a radioactive substance that would take an hour to decay. The cat is unable to interact with this substance. If the substance decays, it activates a hammer through a relay that would shatter a small flask of acid. Therefore if the radioactive substance decays, the acid is released and the cat dies. If the substance does no...
