How I'd describe my personality in two sentences

I am a driven, curious and diligent young man seeking to forge a career as a writer. I am passionate about story-telling and believe that everything has an inner narrative that is begging to be shared.

"Don't let anyone define you. You define yourself." Billie Jean King

How I'd describe my approach to my work

I have always loved to write and tell stories. I take writing very seriously and draw inspiration from all around me. I have studied English literature and believe that this has given me a firm base from which to approach any kind of writing challenge. I am constantly trying to improve on what I have done before and learn knew ways to use language to convey meaning. I have experience in both academic, journalistic and fictional writing and believe I bring a dynamic tone to everything I produce. I take great pride in the fact that I write and speak well, but believe this is not simply a gift but rather a skill which I have honed over many years. Fundamentally, I love the process of writing and find great joy in immersing myself in new and challenging projects.

"You cannot swim for new horizons until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore."
William Faulkner

Why should you choose me for your project

I am motivated and dedicated and take great pride in punctuality and effectiveness. I have a wide variety of interests that is ever expanding and have the skills necessary to research and write with authority on any topic. I have experience writing in many different fields and believe that this gives me an edge. I have written research papers, newspaper articles, reports, self-help books, fiction, songs, and poetry and am always seeking to expand that list.

Any project on my plate becomes my main priority and I will stop at nothing to meet and exceed your expectations. I have a sound work ethic and treat writing as a more than a simple job to be done but a process to be refined and perfected. I am curios and continually looking to impress with my work. I do not seek out the mundane but relish a challenge and always put everything I can into my work.

"What did I know best that I had not written about and lost? What did I know about and truly care for the most?" Ernest Hemingway

Humanizing Homelessness

The first man I approached refused to be photographed or named, I will call him Alex hereafter, but had such a story to tell. He told me that at the tender age of 11 he was already wrapped up in a world of drugs and gangs. Being from Manenberg, resources were slim and opportunities to leave were slimmer. Alex met his father late in life and had the unique misfortune of meeting him in Pollsmoore prison after being sentenced for drug related crimes. His father was a prevalent number (member of a number gang like the 26’s) and that really set the tone for Alex’s formative years. He was raised ...

Political Whataboutery: The Consequences of Confusion

The term whataboutery has recently been added to the Oxford English Dictionary and this fact is telling of the state of modern political speech. The term is defined as “the technique or practice of responding to an accusation or difficult question by making a counter-accusation or raising a different issue.” Donald Trump has emerged as the master of this technique. He never answers a question directly and often completely ignores the question. Trump was recently interviewed by a Fox News reporter and when asked about his involvement with Michael Cohen, who had allegedly spent vast sums to k...

Why Memes: An investigation into communication, engagement and politics through University Meme Pages

It is within this context that youth have begun to search elsewhere for avenues of engaging with material and culture which they relate to. Social media and the internet generally has offered huge opportunities for youth to engage with culture and news outside of traditional structures. Danah Boyd has outlined the idea of a networked public which is essentially a platform created with networked technology which allows for engagement by all members of these cyber-communities (Boyd, 2010). With the above in mind, it seems that youth are disengaging with traditional print and broadcast media s...

A Stoic Life: Understand the Wisdom of Stoic Philosophy and How You Can Incorporate it Into Your Life

Sixteen years after the death of Epictetus, Rome had a new emperor. His name was Marcus Aurelius, and during his rule he faced innumerable challenges. Rome witnessed heavy military action during this time. Five years of war with Parthia ended only to see the rise of a new enemy in the form of the violent Germanic tribes. Marcus Aurelius was beset with a constant stream of bloody battles fought for the maintenance of an inherited empire. To punctuate these blood-soaked years, a plague-ravaged Rome, killing millions of its inhabitants. Unyielding and continuous challenges threatened the very ...

All the Jazz: 'Whiplash'

‘Whiplash’ is a thrilling, fast-paced tale that will blow your mind! The film follows a young first year music student, Andrew Neyman (Miles Teller), who attends a prestigious college of music in New York City as he attempts to become the next great jazz drummer. He is noticed by Terence Fletcher (JK Simmons), the school’s brutal conductor, who accepts Andrew into the Conservatory’s studio band and then uses barbaric teaching methods in an attempt to coax greatness out of Andrew. The film explores themes of human endurance in the pursuit of their dreams and leaves us asking the question, ‘i...

A Blessing and a Curse: The Wolkberg Trail

When I was 21 years old I went on an ill-fated trip to the remote Wolkberg mountain wilderness area in Limpopo, South Africa. I was invited by a group of young hikers based in South Africa's capital city, Pretoria, and I could not have been more excited. After weeks of anticipation the day was finally upon us. Unfortunately nothing went to plan. The journey got off to a terrible start. The vehicle we were going to travel in had had its electronics destroyed by rats and so was immovable. The vehicle we ended up in was an absolute beast but simply did not have the clearance necessary to trave...
