Biography

"It can be useful to think of writing as gardening. You plant the seeds, but each plant will take its own way and shape. The gardener's in control, yes; but plants are living, willful things. Every story has to find its own way to the light. Your great tool as gardener is your imagination" -Ursula K. Le Guin

I'm Mark, a writer and lifelong storyteller. I hold a BA in Creative Writing, and have been composing and appreciating writing at a professional level since '14. While my first love was poetry, I have since then enjoined and enjoyed many genres and content styles. Variety is the spice of life, and bringing that zest to exploring new ideas has led me to me to pursue projects in many topic areas of prose, including:

Non-Fiction
-Memoir
-History
-Humor
-Nature/Naturalism
-Philosophy
-Psychology
-Entertainment & Culture
-Criticism & Art Appreciation
-Current Events & Politics

...and Fiction
-Realistic Fiction (Psychological Realism)
-High Fantasy
-Urban Fantasy
-Paranormal
-Horror
-Sci-Fi/Dystopia
-Western
-Thriller
-Historical Fiction

As I hope the above list shows, reading has similarly been a fixation throughout my life and the oevre of great storytellers' styles guides me in all that I pursue: Shakespeare, Herman Melville, Audre Lorde, J.R.R. Tolkien, Cormac McCarthy, Amy Tan, Octavia Butler, and Stephen King are some prose style influences, to name a few. I appreciate artistic beauty in many forms and try to integrate the spirit of inspiration of great painters and filmakers into my work as well: Stanley Kubrick, Ingmar Bergman, Charlie Kaufman, Hayao Miyazaki, Rene Magritte, Salvador Dali, and H.R. Giger move me with their ingenuity of visual storytelling and serve as examples of how to deeply inhabit a concept or imagined world.

My hobbies are hanging with my beloved pets (I have a 22-year-old cockatiel and two sweet tabby cats who love to dote on me while I'm working,) hiking and walking outdoors, collecting vinyl records, playing my guitar, singing (I am an operatically trained Bass-Baritone,) cooking, watching movies, and as befits any proudly nerdy storyteller playing Dungeons & Dragons with my pals.

Whether in a non-fiction context or creative context, I work quickly and thoroughly to produce copy consistent with its statement of purpose or guiding vision. I'm always excited to bring ideas into substance through text, and relish a challenge. Together, we can make your vision reality.

the Clydesdale Account

Go stir that fire, Alice, then lean close and mark what I have to say to you. We been sitting in this cabin a long time, I should say, you tending me sick in it. We both knew last month when I came up from the yard hacking blood that I was done. I am proud of how long I’ve held out considering the consumption has gone this far where I can hardly hear myself whispering to you. A man feels his death when its pall is on him, its clamminess has a somehow unmistakable grip like the handshake of one who doesn’t mean it friendly. It’s my dying time. Fret not darling, there there, that’s the lea...

Application

The gentle whoosh of sub-bass emitting from the stereo in her wall awoke Pilar. The subs were a new acquisition by her parents—recent studies had found audible noise “slightly harmful to the complexion.” She kept her eyes closed, allowing the roar to immerse her. She liked to imagine she was lying in a tide-pool as she did this, with waves crashing over her. It put her in a good mind-frame to take inventory of her Plastis: hips, check; scalp, check; ribs, check. It could be very painful if they came unadjusted in the night, or worse, if the fasteners for her Plastiwigs on top her head snagg...

Star Trek: Discovery Review

Let me first say I am a trekkie of unassailable métier: I have watched all the canonical Star Trek shows (TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise) as well as all the films--yes even the godawful JJ Abrams ones. If you are a Trekkie what I'm about to say may confuse and upset you, please "brace for impact": TOS...is bad. Don't get me wrong, I watched and enjoyed it, hell I might even rewatch it since it's after all the cornerstone of one of my favorite fictional universes but I want fans to have the maturity to be able to acknowledge that the splendid afterlife it has had in the form of ...
