Biography
"There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit at a typewriter and bleed." - Ernest Hemingway
My name is Robbie, and I have never known or time or place where I did not write. While I have recently joined the TUW team, I am a published novelist, and have penned personal essays, op-eds, poetry and short stories in literary journals, magazines and newspapers. I have a Bachelor's degree in Communication Studies, and have marked experience writing research-based texts. I was hired as a creative to translate a TV pilot from French to English, and I am expertly skilled in both languages. I have also worked in film and television production as an assistant director for the past ten years, teaching me to work and thrive under pressure, allowing me to understand good scriptwriting and dialogue, and have a great respect for deadlines. I am a great listener, communicator, and through my work experience I have learned to work with clients to take a vision and bring it to life with their voice.
As I sit here and attempt to write an interesting bio, I'm reminded of the first time I published a short story. It was in the student newspaper of the university I went to, and it was about a lonely, trepidatious lurker who has maddening writer's block. Hopefully that's not a reflection of my career--but I do love writing about misfits. I love the unlovable aspects of our humanity, I love tragicomedy, authenticity, satire. My favourite writer is Douglas Coupland, and I have devoured every single one of his books. Some of the greats that have inspired me; Maya Angelou, Ernest Hemingway, Graham Greene, John Irving, Agatha Christie, Jonathan Franzen, Miriam Toews, Margaret Atwood.
I am passionate about writing in a way that makes me hungry to put words to stories that need a voice. I am skilled at fiction (comedy, romance, thriller, mystery), have great research skills and a comprehensive lexicon of popular culture. I have a thirst for knowledge that will enable me to sink my teeth in any non-fiction topic you might be interested in. As a relentless observer of human nature and a sponge for experiences, I do have a specific affinity for self-help topics such as parenting, relationships, travel, love and fitness.

The Lying Juilliards
The problem with Cedar Point is that there seemed to be no problem at all. The pretty houses of the town were well aligned and stood harmoniously without being homogenous, and their lawns were well-tended without seeming robotically maintained. And yet, there was a certain old feeling about Cedar Point, a certain sense of history that dispelled any notion anyone may have had about it being one of those new, manufactured suburbs which seemed to be springing up everywhere. The kind of town that had grey brick houses, aluminum sidings and pre-fabrication oozing from their neutral tones. An...
The Other Way
I spent a long time wondering if maybe I should have looked the other way when he walked in. I had always been an unusual girl in that respect; one moment subjugated to the present, the next with my head existing entirely elsewhere, eyes sweeping the room, vacant, not seeing what was directly in front of me. My Nanny used to say that when my mind wandered away, I sucked the soul out of anyone around me, just to taste it, momentarily transforming them into vapid, empty creatures until I gave it back. My Nanny was always full of voodoo shit like that, but I humoured her. I always thought it w...
How to Deal With a Horrible Boss
10 Ways To Deal With A Horrible Boss I had a Horrible Boss, just recently. I work on contract, so I am lucky enough to have a finite period of time with The Boss on any given project. Once it ends, so does my relationship with them. I could go on and explain the type of psychological manipulation and emotional abuse that is so common amongst Horrible Bosses, but we can compare notes another day. For now, let’s talk about survival mode. 1. Keep smiling. There is nothing more infuriating to someone who is trying to destroy your soul than seeing that they are not getting under your s...
The Life and Times of Eliza A. Smart
Being seventeen was a challenging age in the best of circumstances, and Eliza was not the best of circumstances. In many respects, Eliza was just your average seventeen year old. She studied sometimes, but mostly not, went to class during the week, as her course schedule dictated. She laughed sometimes, and sometimes not. But in most ways important to being a seventeen year old, Eliza was in fact not your classic seventeen year old. Eliza pondered things, inquisitive of nature. Her angst was existential, it ran deep within. She didn’t worry about her hair or the image she projected fr...
Burning Man Festival: An Overview
Historically, the Burning Man initiative began in 1986 by a group of some twenty self-proclaimed free spirits led by a man named Larry Harvey in San Francisco as a tribute to the summer solstice. he now symbolic burning ritual of the Man statue began that June 21 on Baker Beach and evolved slowly over the years, becoming increasingly bigger, far-reaching and more thoroughly organized, with a specific vision. In 2019, close to 79 000 people congregated in Nevada at Black Rock City, the temporary makeshift community where the event is held in the Black Rock desert. Together, they celebrated t...
