Biography

Hello, my name is Jon. It seems that I have fallen into a career of doing what I love every day. I never thought that I would find myself in the position to do as much writing as I do reading, or to do as much living as I do thinking. If I were to go back in time to my 10-year-old self and say to them, “you’re going to be a writer”, I’m not sure what I would have said, probably something along the lines of “nah”.

Truth be told, I was forged into the person I am today fairly late in my education. I think I was nearly 17 when I decided to do an abrupt turn in my habits, my thoughts, and my goals. I fell in love with the unknown and decided that I would chase it. In reality, I think I fell in love with the romanticism of renaissance artists and Leonardo da Vinci. But, It served me well and led me to where I am and I couldn’t be happier. Along the way I got my bachelor’s and master’s degree in history in Canada with trips abroad laced in-between. Altogether I have 7-10 years of academic writing experiences with a focus on long-form scholarly articles.

Outside academia, I love to read. I suppose I really love to think and reading makes me think. I’d say with confidence that writing has always been the medium where I can truly flesh out thoughts. Originally, I enjoyed reading non-fiction monographs on everything from Ancient Greece to the development of capitalism with a little bit of physics and cosmology to spice it up. I think I was 21 when I first started reading novels regularly and at first, I was unconvinced, but slowly those words burrowed into my soul and sprouted. I felt like I could truly experience a thousand different lives and feel the true depth of all my emotions (Yann Martel’s “Self” destroyed me). I can remember the moment when I stopped reading these novels and started living through them. It forever changed my life and fostered a real appreciation for literature.
