The Magic of El Mirador
Shrouded by the Petén Jungle, the Mayan city of El Mirador is bathed in a ceremonious silence. Unlike the celebrity-status ruins of Chichen Itzá, it is largely untouched by governments and mass-tourism. El Mirador offers intimate communion with the ancient past. Built stone by precious stone, the city of El Mirador was built over 2,000 years ago by Mayas living in the Mirador Basin. It became a vibrant metropolis of approximately 14 square miles and is considered the cradle of the Maya civilization. Today, it lies modestly swathed deep in the rainforest, welcoming only the most adventu...
Afro-Mexican Resistance: Freedom through Politics and Culture
Despite the odds against them, Afro-Mexicans maintain their legacy of resistance through mobilizing, organizing, and cultural pride. History has proven that lasting progress begins at the grassroots level. The Afro-Mexican movement undoubtedly benefited from the momentum built by the Zapatista Movement of the early 1990s. In 1994, indigenous peoples in the southern state of Chiapas formed the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) and led an armed uprising against the Mexican government. Indigenous people demanded: work, land, housing, food, health, education, independence, libert...
The Cost of a Negative Thought
So what if you wake up on the wrong side of the bed? Is it so harmful to stew in a nasty mood for a bit? Let’s take a closer look at how these “innocent irritations” actually cost us quite a bit. Contagious and terminal Negative thinking creates negative feelings, which emphasizes and encourages more negative thoughts. There is no room for possibility or improvement. It says, “This is terrible. This will always be terrible.” Consider the difference between the thoughts, “I’m always late and unprepared” and “Today I’m a bit unorganized, but I can make better decisions.” The first thoug...
Growing through the Enneagram: Transcending Your Tendencies
Chapter 2: Identifying Your Enneagram Type Existence is brilliantly non-repetitive. Your fingerprint is unique amongst the billions of people on the planet. It is even one of a kind taking into account every person who has ever existed. Yet despite your genetic and biographical uniqueness, you are still an expression of high intelligence. And that intelligence is also efficient, manifesting itself in patterns and cycles. This is the wisdom of archetypes embedded into many ancient spiritual traditions. The protagonists, heroes, forefathers, and even the deities of many traditions were...
