Biography

Stephen Munga grew up on a large family dairy farm in Canada and graduated from the University of British Colombia with a degree in Business Management. Immediately after graduating, he flew across the world to Africa for what was supposed to be a short, one-year volunteering position in Rwanda. Over the year, while writing grants, proposals, and project concepts to help farmers save money and test different agricultural techniques, he accepted his passion for writing and fell in love with Africa. Stephen used his writing to go above and beyond professional writing, and began blogging his travels, writing testimonies of farmers he interacted with to grow awareness for food insecurity and poverty, and writing a book about his adventures in different parts of Africa. Stephen is very athletic and easy-going and loves playing sports with whoever is around to do it with him. He is currently living in Rwanda and spends his time writing, helping people in his church community, and reading different fiction from around the world.

My Dream of an Adventurous Life

Tanzania last year. Austria this year. South Africa in January... practicality doesn't matter when you're as lucky as I am. In fact, it makes my job less fun for my readers. And besides, I like to change continents every year, not just countries, to completely change the culture and community that I live in. My requirements for my year-long leases are simple. Running water, a toilet, working gas, 2 bedrooms, and I must be at least three stories high with a view of the city. I live my life, a new life in every country, for 12 months, and then I repeat somewhere else, writing down my life...

This Education Yields More than Food: Volunteering in Rwanda

Contrary to what you might think when training farmers on different farming and savings techniques, the biggest difference I see being made is through gender equality training. Two-thirds of both of the farmer groups and savings groups are women, and we are seeing a difference in food security by empowering them. One member shared, “My husband used to say, ‘all of this is mine’ and sell the products that I farmed. No longer.” Many of the problems that arise in the lives of rural farmers in Rwanda is just from a lack of education. As I visited a farming group one day, a couple shared their s...

Balenciaga: Creating the Correct Atmosphere

Employees at Balenciaga stores are used to creating an aura of luxury and high-class. They are representing a highly sought-after clothing company and must be inviting to the “correct type” of customer, and therefore uninviting to the majority. The job of the employees is to sell directly to consumers and to be friendly, encouraging, and warm to regular and “socially legitimate” customers who have the capital and desire to buy the products at the store. However, the employees must also portray an overwhelming sense of power and control in their store, and expertise of the products, in order...
